FAQ

What is Echo Hydrogen Water™?

Hydrogen water is simply water with dissolved molecular hydrogen gas (H2). Hydrogen gas is separated from a stream of water during electrolysis. Then, we dissolve it into a second stream of water. Hydrogen has been shown to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, which is the leading cause of disease. Hydrogen’s therapeutic benefits are displayed in nearly 1,000 scientific studies and articles, spanning over 12 years.

What Makes Echo Water™ Machines Better Than Other Water Machines?

Molecular hydrogen, which is supported by over 1,000 scientific studies, has always been the focus of Echo Water™ Machines. The Echo Module™ sets our machines apart from the other water machines on the market. Our patented module is designed so that the electrodes are not in contact with the water that you drink, Hydrogen gas is separated from a stream of water and dissolved into a second stream of water.

Our machines create hydrogen-enriched water without changing the pH of the source water. The primary purpose of Echo Antioxidant Water™ Machines is to make hydrogen-enriched water, not to create alkaline water with hydrogen-enriched water as a bonus.

The cathode in our Echo Module™ is not in contact with the water you drink. Because of the way the module is designed, it can never accumulate mineral buildup on the electrodes. This means that our machines will continue to be able to dissolve hydrogen gas and produce quality Antioxidant Water™, unlike other water machines that require cleaning and maintenance every two weeks.

How does the Echo Water™ compare to Kangen water®?

The focus of Echo Water™ Machines is and has always been on molecular hydrogen, which is supported by nearly 1,000 scientific studies. Our proprietary Echo Hydrogen Module™ is vastly different than any other hydrogen-producing module in the world. In the patented module, the electrodes are not in contact with the water you are drinking. This means that the metal of the electrodes is not in the water. In the module, we separate hydrogen gas from a stream of water and then dissolve this gas in a second stream of water. Echo Hydrogen Water™ Machines were designed from the ground up with the primary purpose of making hydrogen water, not creating hydrogen water as a by-product of producing alkaline water. We make the hydrogen water without changing the pH of the source water. Because the cathode in our hydrogen module is not in contact with the water, it can never get mineral buildup and will always be able to dissolve hydrogen gas.

On the other hand, Kangen Water® machines requires constant cleaning (as stated in their warranty page) in order to continue dissolving hydrogen gas. If you don’t clean the Kangen Water® machine with citric acid or vinegar, you won’t have very much, or any, dissolved hydrogen gas in the water. The Echo Water™ Machines do not need constant cleaning to be able to dissolve hydrogen gas. Cleaning them once a year, from a preventative maintenance perspective, is enough.

While Kangen Water® does well at making alkaline and acid water as it was designed to, it does not perform well at producing hydrogen water. Their saline-injected water causes the platinum coating on their electrodes to diminish over time. If you don’t clean the Kangen Water® machines often, the mineral buildup on the cathode prevents the hydrogen bubbles from being dissolved. If they are not dissolved, they will not have the benefits. In their warranty, Kangen Water® states that their machines need to be cleaned every two weeks.

What is electrolysis? How does it work?

Electrolysis was first discovered by Dr. Anthony Carlisle when he was trying to produce hydrogen gas in the year 1800. Electrolysis happens when water is shocked with electricity. When this happens, a small amount of hydrogen and oxygen is converted to gas.

Typically, electrolysis separates water into alkaline or acidic water. Echo Water™ Machines have a proprietary technology that uses electrolysis to harvest hydrogen gas (H2) without changing the pH of the water to be alkaline or acidic. Then, hydrogen gas (H2) is dissolved into a second stream of water, so the H2 water you drink never touches the electrodes.

Does Echo Water™ have any taste?

The addition of hydrogen into water does not add or change the taste of the water. The only thing that gives water a taste are contaminants, such as chemicals, metals, or minerals. The Echo Water™ Machines that have built-in filtration remove these contaminants, producing clean hydrogen water. Many customers say this filtered hydrogen water is the best-tasting water they’ve had because of the clean taste.

Can the Echo unit be used with any water source type? Ex. Well, Municipal, Reverse Osmosis?

Yes, our Echo Water™ Machines can be used with nearly every water source. The Echo H2 Server™ is ideal for connecting to a reverse osmosis or another home water filtration system.

When connecting to well water, we recommend using the external Sulfur and Heavy Metals Filter. This filter removes common toxins found in well water while protecting your Echo Water™ Machine.

When connecting to municipal water, we recommend using the external Fluoride Filter. This filter significantly reduces the amount of fluoride in the water.

If you live in an area with hard water or high TDS (total dissolved solids), we recommend the external Hard Water Filter. This filter will extend the life of your Echo Water™ Machine.

Is There a Difference Between Antioxidant Water™ and Alkaline Water?

The most notable difference between alkaline and Antioxidant Water™ is the pH level. While alkaline water has a pH higher than 7, Antioxidant Water™ is simply hydrogen-infused wither with no pH change.

Despite much of the hype about alkaline water, the real health benefits come from molecular hydrogen gas. The most common process for making hydrogen-enriched water is dissolving hydrogen into alkaline water during electrolysis. We also used this process until we created our proprietary Echo Module™, which generates hydrogen-enriched water with no pH change, also known as Echo Antioxidant Water™.

Drinking alkaline water can alter your stomach’s pH levels, so we recommend only using this water for light cleaning and disinfecting fruits and vegetables. If you’re looking for a drink that delivers the benefits of molecular hydrogen without altering the pH of your stomach, Antioxidant Water™ is the right drink for you.

What are the uses of acidic water?

Acidic water can be used on your face, hair, teeth, and to rinse your mouth to kill bacteria. It’s a wonderful sterilizer. You can use it for skin issues such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, cuts, and burns, and it works for pink eye. It kills E. coli, Salmonella, MRSA, and staph infections, as long as there are 10 parts per million of hypochlorous acid (HOCI). This is the active ingredient in the water that enables it to kill bacteria or things of that nature. Hypochlorous acid is in the chlorine family and has four times the kill spectrum than that of regular bleach. It is non-toxic, and you can drink it without harming yourself, but most benefits do not come from consumption. You can also use it on plants, and they will thrive. You can wash vegetables, meat, and fish, nearly doubling their freshness.

What happens if I accidentally drink the acidic water?

The acidic water is non-toxic and won’t cause any problems; however, it’s not recommended that you drink it. The only time the acidic water should be consumed is in the case of food poisoning, severe stomach cramps, or acid reflux.

What type of water should I drink from my Echo Ultimate™?

For the health benefits that have been shown in nearly 1,000 studies, you should drink the hydrogen (H2) water. Most Echo Water™ Machines only create hydrogen water. However, the Echo Ultimate™ produces four types of water, including alkaline and acidic.

Some people prefer the taste of alkaline or acidic water. Keep in mind that we do not recommend drinking above a level 2 for either the alkaline or acidic water. Be careful not to consume water higher with a pH higher than 10, as that can cause issues. If water is higher than 10 pH, you can add a few drops of lemon juice to lower the pH level.

Can I take medications with Echo Water™?

Because Echo Hydrogen Water™ has a neutral pH, it is perfectly safe to take with medications. On the other hand, alkaline water is not the best for taking time-release medications. Time-release medications are a two-part pill designed to resist an acid environment because the stomach is very acidic. Alkaline water will dissolve tablets very quickly, so they will no longer have a time-release effect.

Can I add flavoring to the hydrogen water?

Yes, you can add ingredients to change the taste of the water. The amount of hydrogen that would be dislodged by this is minimal. Enjoy your water!

What kind of maintenance will I have to do for the Echo Machine?

When you choose to get an Echo Water™ Machine, you’re choosing to invest in your health and your life. While most machines require very little maintenance, regular preventive cleanings will ensure the machine lasts longer.

For the Echo H2 Machine™ and Echo Ultimate™, the Echo Hydrogen Module™ will always operate buildup free, but mineral buildup can occur in the lines. Cleaning the machine is simple, and all you need is a Cleaning Cartridge. When installed, the Cleaning Cartridge flushes citric acid throughout the machine, removing any mineral buildup from the lines.

For the Echo H2 Pitcher™, you’ll need baking soda and water. The detailed cleaning instructions are in the product manual.

The Echo H2 Server™ requires previous filtration, such as a reverse osmosis system. The previously filtered water reduces the need for cleaning.

We recommend that an Echo Water™ Machine have a preventive cleaning once a year at a minimum. If you live in an area with hard water or high total dissolved solids (TDS), we recommend cleaning your machine at least twice a year.

You can also sign up for the filter subscription plan, which gets your filters and cleaning cartridges scheduled and delivered automatically. This is the best way to protect your Echo Water™ Machine and the investment in your health.

How long will the hydrogen last in a container?

In an open cup or glass, hydrogen will last three to five hours.

At most, hydrogen will last in water up to 10 days if the container is filled to the top — with no air space at the top — and the container is tightly sealed. After the container is opened and you take a drink, the hydrogen will last another three to five hours.

If I move to a new home, can I take my Echo unit with me?

Yes! You can disconnect your Echo Water™ Machine and take it with you. Disconnecting the machine is simple and will only take a few minutes.

For an above-counter machine, disconnect the water source line going into the machine, unscrew the faucet diverter valve if that is connected, and unplug the machine.

For an under-sink machine, disconnect the water source line going into the machine and disconnect the lines running to the faucet. Remove the faucet from the sink. Unplug and remove the machine. Many people install a soap dispenser into the now empty faucet hole.

Why is the Echo unit so expensive?

Customers buy an Echo Water™ Machine because they would like to protect themselves and their family. We take that responsibility seriously. That’s why all of our machines are made from the highest quality of medical-grade materials and only manufactured in certified ISO factories. We believe in the quality of our machines. That’s why we back them with a five-year defects warranty that covers parts, labor, and return shipping to you. We also include basic installation for the Echo Water™ Machine and shipping.

Does the hydrogen stay in Echo Water™ if you freeze it?

Hydrogen is a gas, so it can escape even when frozen. Hydrogen can get through steel, metal, glass, and plastic, so it can get through frozen water. We don’t know how much hydrogen would stay in if you made ice cubes from Echo Water™.

Is Echo Water™ structured water?

Structured water is an interesting term. Some people refer to it as microclustered water.

In the sense that water is running through minerals and adding energy and frequencies into the water and therefore changing the structure of water, yes, Echo Water™ is structured. Echo Water™ does have energy and frequencies in it, as the tourmaline in the filter adds infrared energy into the water.

However, if by “structured water,” you are referring to microclustering or changing the water molecule shape or size, then no. Echo H2O™ does not claim this because it is false science.

What is microclustering? Does it really exist?

Microclustering is a marketing term that our competitors use to sell their machines. Microclustering is the claim that water molecules naturally clump together with 11 to 13 molecules per water cluster, but after electrolysis, water clumps together with four to six molecules per cluster. This was proven false in the 1990s. Water does not cluster in this manner. Our competitors use microclustering to explain why the water absorbs faster in the system. This is simply not the case. In reality, the water absorbs faster because of the pH. The pyloric valve in the stomach is pH sensitive. When water with an increased pH reaches the stomach, the pyloric valve will open and release the water into the duodenum and then into the small intestine.

If Echo focuses on hydrogen, why does the machine say alkaline and acidic water?

Our primary focus is on the health benefits of hydrogen; however, there are other household benefits with alkaline and acidic water. The Echo Ultimate™ is the only current machine that makes hydrogen water (H2), alkaline, and acidic water.

There are many household benefits from alkaline and acidic water. The pH change in alkaline water is good for deep cleaning. Acidic water works well as a disinfectant and is frequently used to clean produce.

What things will the Echo filter remove from the water?

The Echo filter removes over 99% of pesticides, chlorine, chloramines, bacteria, viruses, and algae. It also removes 99% of soluble metals such as mercury, lead, nickel, copper, chromium, and arsenic. The Echo filter also stops scale buildup, including lime.

What is a tourmaline gemstone?

Tourmaline gemstone is a semi-precious mineral stone that is well known for its incredible ability to aid in the human body’s detoxification process. It is one of only a handful of minerals that can emit negative ions and far infrared rays.

Is hydrogen water safe?

Molecular hydrogen is very safe. It has been scientifically studied for over 12 years, with nearly 1,000 studies and articles showing that it is safe. Hydrogen gas is naturally produced in the gut, which can produce liters of hydrogen after a fiber-rich meal.

Isn’t hydrogen gas explosive? Am I going to blow up?

Hydrogen is the most energy-dense molecule by mass and is explosive. However, when the gas is dissolved in water, it is not explosive at all, just like if you mixed gunpowder in water, it wouldn’t be explosive. Even when it is in the air, it is only flammable above a 4% concentration by volume, which is not a concern when talking about hydrogen-rich water.

Doesn’t water already have hydrogen in it?

The water molecule has two hydrogen atoms, chemically bound to the oxygen atom. This is different from the hydrogen gas molecule (H2), which is just two hydrogen atoms bound only to each other.

For example, we need oxygen (O2) to live, but we can’t get our oxygen from drinking water. That’s because the oxygen is chemically tied up in the water molecule. We need available oxygen gas (O2), a gas that is not bonded to other atoms or molecules. We also need the available hydrogen gas (H2).

In hydrogen water, the hydrogen that is shown to be therapeutic is the available dissolved hydrogen in its diatomic form, called molecular hydrogen.

If water is “hydrogen rich,” then isn’t it acidic?

Echo Antioxidant Water™ adds hydrogen gas (or molecular hydrogen) into your water. Hydrogen has been proven in multiple scientific studies to be a very powerful antioxidant. However, because of the Echo Module™, adding the additional hydrogen gas does not change the makeup or pH of the water.

Hydrogen can also be referenced at a positive hydrogen ion (H+), which would be very acidic.

Echo Water™ Machines make hydrogen water by dissolving molecular hydrogen (H2), which keeps the water neutral.

I read that if you add hydrogen to water, it makes it hydrogen peroxide. Is that true?

Water has the chemical formula H2O, and hydrogen peroxide has the chemical formula H2O2, which contains an extra oxygen, not hydrogen. So it cannot form hydrogen peroxide. The fact is that molecular hydrogen does not bond to or react with the water molecules; it dissolves into the water.

Won’t the dissolved hydrogen gas immediately escape out of the water?

While hydrogen gas does immediately start coming out of the water, it doesn’t vanish immediately. Depending on the surface area, agitation, temperature, etc., the hydrogen gas can stay in the water for a few hours or longer before it dissipates. This is much like carbonated water or soda that contains carbon dioxide gas (CO2). Because it does leave, it is best to drink the water before it goes “flat.”

In an open cup or glass, hydrogen will last three to five hours.

At most, hydrogen will last in water up to 10 days if the container is filled to the top — with no air space at the top — and the container is tightly sealed. After the container is opened and you take a drink, the hydrogen will last another three to five hours.

When were the benefits of hydrogen water first discovered?

The earliest account of hydrogen gas having medicinal properties was in 1888, when it was found to aid in wound healing. But, it didn’t become a popular topic among scientists until 2007, when an article about the benefits of hydrogen was published in the prestigious journal of Nature Medicine by Dr. Ohta’s group.

I heard that drinking alkaline water can neutralize excess acid. Is that true?

Alkaline water is not a buffer and has low alkalinity. As such, it cannot neutralize much acid. Many people have seen that just a small amount of soda can easily lower the pH of a gallon of alkaline water. To help put this into perspective, consider that 1 teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can neutralize the same amount of acid as 10,000 liters of alkaline water at a pH of 10. This is the primary reason why medical professionals have been skeptical about “alkaline ionized water.” It simply wasn’t known that the benefit of this water is attributed to the dissolved hydrogen gas until around 2007.

How much deuterium is in Echo Water™?

There is deuterium in all water: tap water, spring water, ocean water, river water, etc. When the source water goes through an Echo Water™ Machine, the amount of deuterium is reduced.

TECHNICAL FAQ

There is no power to my Echo H2 Machine™. What do I do?

This could be a few different things. It could be that the power cord is not pushed in all the way, the GFCI outlet or the breaker tripped, or the machine’s fuse is blown.

My filter is leaking. What do I do?

Usually, the filter is simply not installed correctly and doing it again will fix the issue. Remove the filter and reinstall it from the bottom first. There is a black O-ring on the top and bottom that seals the filter, so if the rings are damaged, you will need to order a replacement. Every few years, you will want to put some grease on the O-ring to keep it soft.

I see white flakes in my cup. Why?

This is calcium carbonate, which forms from the minerals in the water. It is normal that the minerals can precipitate out of the water. 100% of your water content is flowing into the unit, but the minerals are concentrated into the alkaline water, which is only 2/3 of the water coming out. This higher concentration has increased the chance for them to precipitate out naturally, and they will bond to the glass. The calcium is not harmful to you and can be easily cleaned from the glass using vinegar.

Is this water safe for my body if it leaves residue on my glass?

Yes, it is completely safe. As the white residue is calcium carbonate, it is no different than taking a calcium supplement.

Can I make this machine stop talking to me?

Yes. All you need to do is lower the volume. Depending on what unit you are using, the process will vary.

  1. Echo 9 Ultra Machine™: Press the settings button, go to volume, and turn it down.
  2. Echo 9 Machine™: With the unit in standby mode, press the “Filter” sensor and then press the “Acidic” sensor to lower the volume all the way down. Press the power sensor to exit the programming mode and save the change.
  3. Echo 7 Machine™: With the unit in standby mode, press the “Filter” sensor and then press the “Acidic” sensor to lower the volume all the way down. Press the power sensor to exit the programming mode and save the change.

My machine feels warm. Is that normal

Typically, your water temperature will not differ much from your tap water temperature. If your machine feels warm, that could be an indicator that your voltage settings are higher than needed for the conductivity of your source water. The machine may prompt you to turn the voltage down. Contact customer support for assistance in lowering your voltage settings: 800-337-7017.

Why is the water coming out of my machine not cold?

Typically, the temperature of the source water will not vary much from the water coming out of the machine. If it does, the voltage may be too high for the conductivity of your water. It could also mean that the water is flowing too slowly through the machine.

How do I know when it is time to change my filter?

On all of our units except for the Echo Retro (previously known as the NHM-130 Machine), there is a filter change indicator. There’s a chip in the filter that communicates with the unit and monitors how many gallons have passed through it. On the Echo 9 Ultra Machine™, you can see the filter life measured in liters on the bottom left of the screen. When it is time to change the filter, the unit will say, “Please change filter.” It’s important to follow the instructions and change the filters when necessary. Once a filter has expired, the machine will only turn on for 10 seconds and then shut itself off. The Echo Retro has a date placement on the actual filter where you will write the day you replaced it so you can keep track of the months. The CB filter should be replaced every 6 months. The UF filter should be replaced every 12 months.

Why does my water taste funny?

We are sometimes asked this question, and our responding question is, “What do you mean by ‘funny’?” It’s difficult to answer that question unless we know specifically what it tastes like. Please reach out to customer support for further assistance.

Can I get my water to flow out any faster?

It depends on the unit you have. If you have the Echo 9 Ultra Machine™ with good pressure coming into the system, then no. If you have an Echo H2 Server™ that is connected to an RO system, then yes. By increasing the pressure inside the RO holding tank to at least 11 to 13 pounds of pressure (PSI), you will greatly increase the flow. Typically, RO tanks are on 4 to 6 PSI, and that is fine but not when you are running it through our machines.

I put my new filter in, and it still says I need a new one. What do I do?

If you’re talking about the Echo 9 Ultra Machine™ or the Echo 9 Machine™, there is a chip on the back of the filter that talks to the unit. There is an arrow at the top of the filter that must be aligned with the arrow at the top of the filter compartment. If you have an Echo 7 Machine™, then you can reset the filter manually by holding the alkaline button for four seconds while the unit is in standby.

Why is my unit saying, “low pressure”?

This can be many things:

  • Check the water source. You will need to trace your white source waterline back to a valve and shut it off. Then disconnect your source waterline from the bottom of the machine and place the line into a bowl. Slowly turn the source water valve back on, and if it pours into the bowl, water was getting to the machine.
  • Check the voltage settings. If they’re too high for the conductivity of the water, it may create calcium that can lead to clogged solenoids and blocked water flow. In this case, you will need to lower the settings and use a cleaning kit.
  • If there was a failure in the main solenoid, no water would enter the machine, and it would need to come in for repair.
  • In some cases, your source water pressure may be too high for the machine to function properly. Too much incoming pressure would stop the main solenoid from opening. There would need to be a pressure regulator installed on either the house or the source waterline before the machine.

How many ppm will I get with my Echo Machine?

The ppm will be different based on what machine you have and what your source water is. The Echo H2 Machine™, Echo Ultimate™, Echo H2 Server™, and Echo Retro all produce from 0.8 to 1.2 ppm. This may vary slightly depending on your source water. The Echo 9 Ultra Machine™ is dependent on minerals being in the source water. If you have at least 75 to 100 ppm of TDS, the machine will produce a lot of hydrogen. The hydrogen water will have 0.8 to 1.5 ppm, depending on the conductivity of the water. With the alkaline water, each level will increase. Level 2 can be up to 1.5 ppm when the water has plenty of minerals. Level 4 can be as high as 2.5 to 3 ppm.

Keep in mind that these numbers will vary depending on your source water. Also keep in mind that you only need 0.5 ppm to receive the therapeutic benefits. If you drink four, 16-ounce glasses of hydrogen water at 1 ppm, then that is 4 ppm to the body because there is a stacking effect.

What should the ORP be?

ORP is really an unimportant measurement and typically relates more to the pH than hydrogen. With alkaline water, you would have an ORP ranging from -600 to -800. With the hydrogen water, you would have around -400. This applies with Echo Water™ Machines. Keep in mind that ORP is unimportant when it comes to showing that there are antioxidant properties in the water.

My unit makes a gurgling sound or flows irregularly. Is it working?

This is normal with the first generation Echo 9 Ultra Machines™ when you select hydrogen water. If you use the alkaline function first and then switch to the hydrogen function, then you should have no gurgling sound. But yes, it is normal, and yes, it is working properly. The gurgling is from valves opening and closing inside the machine.

Water is only coming out of one spout on my faucet. Why?

That could be a few things:

  • If you have the Echo 9 Ultra Machine™ and are using the hydrogen water function, then it’s completely normal.
  • Otherwise, if there’s water only coming out of the bottom spout, that means there may be some calcium built up somewhere in the waterline (3 feet under sink) and you would need to use the cleaning kit.

What should my pH be on each level?

This will be based on the conductivity of the water. You should have at least  50 to 70 TDS. If your source water is neutral (typically 7 to 7.2 pH) then Level 1 would be an 8, level 2 would be a 9, level 3 would be a 10, and level 4 would be a 10+.

The higher the conductivity and the higher the voltage settings are on the unit, the higher the pH will be. The hydrogen water will keep the same pH as your source water.

My Echo Digital Faucet™ is not working, but I can use the front of my machine. Why?

This can be a few things. First, you’ll need to be sure the faucet wire is plugged securely into the back of your unit. If that connection is good, then the faceplate may have lifted from the faucet. This will cause the faucet not to function properly, as they are not actual buttons but heat sensors. The distance cannot change from the sensor to the faceplate or the sensor will not read the heat from your fingertips. In this case, you will need to send the faucet in for repair.

When I check my pH on my under-sink unit, the readings do not seem accurate. Why?

What we need to remember is that there is almost 3 feet of tubing from the machine to the faucet. When switching levels, you need to allow enough time for the previously selected water to flush from the tubing. If you are using a pH reagent and getting a pink or red color then your drops are bad and need to be replaced.
